My husband and I went on a Sunday and absolutely loved the experience.

Caldwell Zoo – A Natural for Family Fun

The zoo is very clean and the staff was so helpful and friendly. The animals look to be very taken care of and seemed to enjoy their environments. The only complaint I had was of the petting zoo. I do not consider a pen with 6 goats a petting zoo. When leaving, our battery was dead on our vehicle and a nice young man waited with us until someone was able to jump start our truck.

Thanks to everyone at the Caldwell zoo for making this a fun and memorable experience.

My toddlers and I enjoy the North American animal exhibits the most. They have two beautiful mountain lions, buffalo, whitetail deer, a red fox, bobcats, river otters, two big alligators, prairie chickens, and, my personal favorite, two healthy and playful black bears. For those more inclined toward African wildlife, the Caldwell Zoo has a wonderful savanna habitat with several elephants, giraffes, warthogs, lions, a cheetah, and an ostrich.

Along the way, you can check out smaller critters in two in-door environments. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, poison-dart frogs, and an anaconda surround a large aquarium filled with largemouth bass, crappie, gar, and a big alligator snapping turtle. There are dozens more animals to see big and small , a really nice gift shop, and a well-kept playground area for the little ones. Children will also love the petting zoo. With all that said, the most impressive part of the zoo is the animal habitat.

The animals are all clearly healthy and live in as natural a habitat as possible in east Texas.

What travelers are saying

This was once a small and free zoo. It is now a large zoo at a reasonable entrance price. The kids had a great day and I must say this zoo is one of the cleanest I have ever seen. I grew up going to Caldwell and it has grown and improved over the years. The grounds have always been pretty and well kept.

Caldwell got into the habitat form of zoo early on and the animals don't seem miserable. Nice zoo to do with small children or a great place to linger for an afternoon. I recommend it. Very clean and nice zoo. My family enjoyed it and would go again. My wife and I visited Tyler on April 22nd for the specific purpose of visiting this zoo. I had read many good things and so we planned our trip around it. First I have to say that zoos and circuses tend to turn me off somewhat. Most zoos I have visited stash the animals in concrete and fencing or in cramped spaces especially some of the ones I have visited in Mexico.

Some zoos seem to be competing to see who can have the most animals. I know some zoos are learning and breeding centers and some take in animals that have been injured and cannot survive on their own. The zoo is spread out over 85 acres and is divided into sections such as 'East Africa', 'North America' and 'South America' among others.

Between each section is a pleasant walk with bamboo, pine trees and again an abundance of brilliantly colored flowers. There aren't a lot of animals but even so, there are some rare and wonderful species. Elephants, giraffes and various deer are viewed in great open spaces. Small lakes with islands are homes to monkeys, lemurs and water fowl.

There are American buffaloes and long horned cattle, black bears, bald eagles and other birds of prey. The zoo currently has a interesting exhibit of various tarantulas from around the world located in the herpetarium along with rattlesnakes, anaconda and poison dart frogs. There are quite a few very large turtles and tortoises to behold along with a pair of white tigers that are very beautiful creatures. The park is very clean and well maintained and there are educational presentations at various times through out the day.

We were lucky to be there when the elephants were presented doing various and amusing tricks to be rewarded with carrots and cantaloupes while one of the zoo keepers told us facts about them. Another presentation involved feeding the otters which were amazing to watch. We went on a Sunday and it didn't seem crowded probably due to the fact that everything is spread out instead of cramped. There were mostly families with babies in strollers and preteens most of which had their handheld video games in front of their faces while enthusiastic parents kept trying to get them to look at the animals.

There are snow cones and various cold drink concessions through out the park along with a cafe and very nice gift shop. As with most zoos there were no plastic straws or lids for the drinks meaning no plastic waste for the animals to try and eat. Good idea! I didn't see 'no smoking' signs but I did see smokers I wouldn't think cigarette butts would be a good snack for the animals either.

There are cool wagons for rent that you can haul your little ones in and I saw some wheelchairs available. Flights Holiday Rentals Restaurants Things to do. Basket 0. Thank heavens the Zoo is awesome. Sooo… We all walked. Haha- the Walkabout Bird Cage is probably one of the highlights of the zoo! And no matter how many times you see these animals, the kids are still amazed! Which makes it worth the more expensive outing! And he actually took a nibble!!

I think living in East Texas we take Caldwell Zoo for granted, but it really is so an amazing attraction. Like Liked by 1 person. Like Like. You are commenting using your WordPress.
